Sunshine Skyway Bridge

수려한 외관과 최장의 PC 사장교로 유명한 Sunshine Skyway Bridge. 정식 명칭은 새교량 건설을 주도한 주지사의 이름을 따서 ‘Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge’이다. 지금의 모습 이전에는 1954년 완공한 truss형식 교량이었지만 선박과의 충돌사고로 교량이 파괴되어 1987년 지금의 모습으로 다시 태어났다. 현재의 교량에는 선박과의 충돌에 대비하여 교각 주위를 36개의 콘크리트로 보호한 장치(Rigid Dolphin System)가 설치되어 있다. 교량과 선박과의 충돌사고 예로 많이 거론되는 교량이므로 그 사고 전말을 소개한다.

1980년 5월9일 오전 07:33분, 5월 4일 휴스턴을 출발하여 플로리다 Tampa항에 입항하려던 화물선 ‘MS Summit Venture‘가 한치 앞을 볼 수 없는 비바람속에서 항로를 잃고 Sunshine Skyway Bridge와 충돌하는 최악의 사고가 발생한다. 이 사고로 교량 일부 구간인 366m가 바다로 떨어졌으며 교량을 건너던 차량 중 7대가 추락하여 35명의 사망자가 발생하는 참사가 일어났다.

당시 이 배의 선장이던 John Lerro씨와 해안경비대간의 통화내용을 보면 당시 상황이 얼마나 절박했는지를 알 수 있다.

Lerro: Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! Coast Guard. Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! Coast Guard.

Coast Guard: Vessel calling Mayday, vessel in distress. This is the United States Coast Guard, St. Petersburg, Florida. Request your position, the nature of distress and the number of persons on board. Over.

Lerro: Get emergency . . . all the emergency equipment out to the Skyway bridge. Vessel has just hit the Skyway bridge. The Skyway bridge is down! Get all emergency equipment out to the Skyway bridge. The Skyway bridge is down. This is Mayday. Emergency situation. (Nearly screaming) Stop the traffic on that Skyway bridge!”

CG: This is Coast Guard St. Petersburg, roger. What size is the vessel that hit the bridge? Over.

Lerro: It’s a large vessel. Stop the traffic on the Skyway bridge. There’s some people in the water. Get emergency equipment out to the Skyway bridge. Now.

CG: This is the Coast Guard, St. Petersburg. Roger. What vessel are you on? Over.

Lerro: Summit Venture. Summit Venture.

CG: Summit Venture, Coast Guard St. Petersburg, roger. What is the size of your vessel and can you assist? Over.

Lerro: Cannot assist. We’re 606 feet long, light draft. We cannot assist here. We’re on an abutment. Stop all the traffic on the bridge. Send some vessels out here to render assistance. People are in the water. [The day the skyway fell]

노란색 Buick을 몰던 Richard Hornbuckle씨는 떨어져 나간 상판 30여 센티미터 앞에서 간신히 멈춰서 사고를 면했고, Ford Courier 픽업을 운전했던 Wesley MacIntire씨는 바다에 떨어진 사람 중에 유일한 생존자로 목숨을 건졌으나 참사 당시의 정신적 고통에 시달리며 살다 1989년 세상을 떠났다.
사고를 낸 선장 John Lerro씨는 당시의 여러 정황이 참작되어 무죄를 선고받고 다시 일을 시작하였으나 얼마 후 다발성 경화증으로 선장 을 그만두고 고통속에서 살다 2002년 사망했다.

새로 건설한 교량은 선박과의 충돌을 고려하여 여러 안전장치를 두었는데, 원할한 항로 확보를 위해 기존 위치에서 300m 동쪽으로 이격하였고, 주탑 주위는 암석으로 섬(rock island)을 만들었으며, Summit Venture 충돌시 하중의 2/3 이상 견딜 수 있는 bumper(dolphine)를 교각 주위에 설치하였다.
