논란에 쌓인 Bridge of Strings이 핑크빛으로 예쁘게 단장을 했다.

교량구조에 대해 잘 모르는 일반인들에게 위 두 교량을 보여 주면서 ‘왼쪽 것은 싼 일반적인 교량이고 오른쪽 것은 지역의 아이콘이 될 수 있는 멋진 교량인데 좀 비싸’ 라며 하나를 고르라면?
영국 Sunderland시에 건설될 교량에 대해 지역 신문사에서 여론조사를 실시하고 있는데 이 시간 현재 오른쪽 교량이 7% : 93%으로 압도적 우위를 보이고 있다. 하나는 일반 거더교 형식이고 황소 뿔같이 생긴 것은 건설비면에서 전자에 비해 30% 정도 비싼 희한한 사장교이다.

이 희한한 주탑모양의 사장교가 가지고 있는 구조적인 문제점에 대해 한 교량 기술자가 연이어 문제점을 지적하는 글을 올리고 있다. 역학에 대한 기본적인 상식만을 알고 있는 엔지니어라도 이 주탑이 구체화되기 위해 얼마나 많은 수고가 들어가야 될 지 짐작하고도 남을 것이다. 당장 공사비 측면에서 예상보다 훨씬 많은 돈이 들어갈 것이며, 시공은 어떻게 해야할지, 카운터 발란스(counter-balance) 역할을 못하는 주탑을 어떻게 보강해야 할 지 등등.
보기 좋은 떡이라고 다 맛있는 것은 아니다. ‘Alamillo Bridge 소고(小考)‘에서도 논했지만 구조적 효율성을 무시한 교량은 터무니 없는 공상에 불과하다. 설령 실현된다고 해도 ‘교량’이라 불러줄 가치가 없다. 단지, 조각일뿐.

지자체간에 교량 EST 경쟁이 붙었나?

Santiago Calatrava가 시편 150:3, “나팔 부는 소리로 여호와를 찬양하라. 하프와 수금으로 여호와를 찬양하라.(Praise Him with a blast of the trumpet; praise Him with the lyre and harp!)”에서 영감을 얻었다는 ‘Bridge of String‘의 완공이 이 달말로 다가 오고 있는데도 아직 논란이 있는 모양이다. 전에 언급했던 내용보단 완공을 앞 둔 교량과 관련된 현실적인 문제점들이 불거져 나오고 있다.

Santiago Calatrava가 디자인한 이태리 Reggio Emilia의 연이은 세 개의 교량을 Structurae[en]에서는 A1 Motorway Bridge라며 그 중 한 개의 교량(Ponte centrale, Central Bridge)만 언급하는데 실은 각각 이태리어로 Ponte nord(North Bridge), Ponte centrale(Central Bridge) 그리고 Ponte sud(South Bridge)이다.

세계 최장의 사장교인 Sutong Bridge 상부 데크(deck) 가설 동영상. 바지로 운반되어 온 최대 450tonf 상부 데크를 290tonf 용량의 jack을 이용하여 가설하였다. 가설 gantry는 영국의 Dorman Long Technology에서 설계, 제작하였다.
