논란에 쌓인 Bridge of Strings이 핑크빛으로 예쁘게 단장을 했다.

6일 밤 이스라엘 예루살렘에 있는 한 다리가 여성의 건강한 유방을 상징하는 분홍색 조명을 받아 빛나고 있다. 스페인의 건축가가 설계한 이 다리는 유방암 예방 캠페인 차원에서 분홍색 조명이 설치되는 전 세계 200개 주요 건축물 중 하나다. [유방암 예방 ‘핑크빛 조명’]

부서를 이동한 후부터 업무영역이 완전히 바뀌어 내 관심사인 교량에 관한 소식들을 들춰 볼 시간이 없다. 거창하게 Respectable Engineer라고 소개만 해놓고 시간만 흘러가고 있어 짬나는 시간에 이 양반에 관해 스크랩 차원에서라도 기록을 해야겠다.

위대한 교량엔지니어의 반열에 오른 사람은 아니고 나보다 나이는 쫌 더 먹어 보이는 영국인인데, Ove Arup에 근무하다 지금은 Expedition Engineering을 창업하여 활발히 활동하고 있다. 이 사람의 이름을 접한 것은 NCE 기사(via The Happy Pontist)인데 우선 기사를 소개하면,

Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)에서 주관하는 교량 공모는 반드시 건축가가 참여하여 팀을 이끌어야만 입찰이 가능한데 이런 부당성에 대하여 꾸준히 문제를 제기한 사람이 Chris Wise다. 기사에서도 예를 들었지만 Santiago Calatrava가 디자인한 화려한(?) 자태의 Trinity Bridge가 비난받는 이유는 교량의 본래의 기능을 유지하기 위한 구조적 건전성이 확보되지 않기 때문이다. 즉, (일부) 건축가들이 만든 음식은 모양만 그럴싸하지 영양가가 없다는 것이다. Santiago Calatrava가 시편 150:3, “나팔 부는 소리로 여호와를 찬양하라. 하프와 수금으로 여호와를 찬양하라.(Praise Him with a blast of the trumpet; praise Him with the lyre and harp!)”에서 영감을 얻었다는 ‘Bridge of String‘의 완공이 이 달말로 다가 오고 있는데도 아직 논란이 있는 모양이다. 전에 언급했던 내용보단 완공을 앞 둔 교량과 관련된 현실적인 문제점들이 불거져 나오고 있다.

Opponents have objected to an alleged lack of transparency in the planning process and to the higher cost of a suspension bridge, said in 2004 to be nearly 70 percent more than that of a conventional concrete bridge. Others also contend that Jerusalem, sacred to three religions but also the poorest city in Israel, already has enough monuments to attract tourists and does not need to spend money on yet another monument. Santiago Calatrava가 디자인한 이태리 Reggio Emilia의 연이은 세 개의 교량을 Structurae[en]에서는 A1 Motorway Bridge라며 그 중 한 개의 교량(Ponte centrale, Central Bridge)만 언급하는데 실은 각각 이태리어로 Ponte nord(North Bridge), Ponte centrale(Central Bridge) 그리고 Ponte sud(South Bridge)이다.

Santiago Calatrava 관련하여 재미있는 기사가 떴다.

내용인 즉, 또 다른 유명 건축가인 Arata Isozaki가 설계한 건물과 Santiago Calatrava가 디자인 했던 Zubi Zuri Bridge(일명, Campo Volantin Bridge)를 연결하는 램프를 설치하기 위해 Zubi Zuri Bridge 일부 부재를 제거한 것에 발끈하여 Santiago Calatrava가 빌바오시를 상대로 ‘내 작품을 훼손했다 ‘는 이유로 2백만 파운드 소송을 했다는 내용이다. 정확히는 ‘원래의 모습으로 복구하고 250,000유로를 내놓던가 바꿀 마음이 없으면 3,000,000유로를 내놔라’ 이다.

과연, 교량같은 공공시설물이 저작권과 연관있는 예술작품으로 취급될 수 있을까? 판결 내용이 관심을 끈다.

Update) 결국 공익이 개인의 권리보다 우선시 된다고 판결이 났다.

In his ruling, judge Edmundo Rodríguez Achútegui recognized that Calatrava’s rights as author of the bridge had been infringed, but he ruled that the public utility of the addition took precedence over this private right. “In addition to constituting a singular artistic creation suitable for protection, the work is public one, offering a service to the citizens, and thus satisfies a public interest,” he said. “If we weigh these interests, the public must prevail over the private.”

붕괴된 I-35W Bridge를 대신할 새 교량안이 그 모습을 드러냈다. Flatiron-Manson 컨소시엄과 교량 디자인을 맡은 FIGG사는 “Arch, Water, Reflection”이라는 컨셉으로 교각과 상부구조에 곡선을 도입한 PSC Box 거더교 형식 2가지를 Conceptual Design안으로 내놓았다.

전에 보편적 디자인 사례로 소개한 적 있던 이탈리아 베니스 운하를 가로지르는 Santiago Calatrava의 새 교량의 건설 작업이 순조롭게 진행 중이다. 그 당시 문제시 되었던 점에 대해서는 최종적으로 어떤 대안이 결정되었을까?

이스라엘의 한 예술가가 Santiago Calatrava가 설계하여 건설중인 교량에 반대하여 자살소동을 벌였다고 한다.

요즘 Santiago Calatrava가 디자인한 이태리 베니스에 건설 중인 교량, Rialto Bridge(1588), Accademia Bridge(1932), 그리고 Scalzi Bridge(1934)에 이어 70여년만에 네 번째로 건설되는 새로운 교량인 Piazzale Roma Footbridge(가칭)에 대해 외국 언론에서 관심을 보이고 있다.

이 교량에 대해선 일전에 Santiago Calatrava MIT 강연 내용이라는 글로 소개한 적이 있다. 아치 형태의 beam으로만 되어 있는 새로운 형식의 교량이었고 그의 도전적인 정신을 높이 사서 소개했었다.
