앞 글에 링크한 Michel Virlogeux의 인터뷰 기사에 언급되어 있는 교량인데 보도를 아치에 설치한 발상이 경이롭다. 확실히 토목은 이런 면에서 약하다. 구조물 자체에만 관심을 두지 인간과 구조물의 공생을 생각하지 못한다. Michel Virlogeux도 이런 발상을 이끌어 낸 건축가의 생각을 높이 샀다.

건축가들과의 협업으로 많은 교량들을 만들어 낸 Michel Virlogeux이지만 인터뷰 내용을 보면 교량(혹은 구조) 엔지니어로서의 그의 소신이 어떠한지 명확히 알 수 있다.

You have structures that are coming from fantasy, imagination and those from an artistic concept. This is not the way I like. I like structures for which the architecture is completely guided by the structural forces.

부서를 이동한 후부터 업무영역이 완전히 바뀌어 내 관심사인 교량에 관한 소식들을 들춰 볼 시간이 없다. 거창하게 Respectable Engineer라고 소개만 해놓고 시간만 흘러가고 있어 짬나는 시간에 이 양반에 관해 스크랩 차원에서라도 기록을 해야겠다.

위대한 교량엔지니어의 반열에 오른 사람은 아니고 나보다 나이는 쫌 더 먹어 보이는 영국인인데, Ove Arup에 근무하다 지금은 Expedition Engineering을 창업하여 활발히 활동하고 있다. 이 사람의 이름을 접한 것은 NCE 기사(via The Happy Pontist)인데 우선 기사를 소개하면,

• New bridge competition row
• RIBA backs down in bridge competition row

Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)에서 주관하는 교량 공모는 반드시 건축가가 참여하여 팀을 이끌어야만 입찰이 가능한데 이런 부당성에 대하여 꾸준히 문제를 제기한 사람이 Chris Wise다. 기사에서도 예를 들었지만 Santiago Calatrava가 디자인한 화려한(?) 자태의 Trinity Bridge가 비난받는 이유는 교량의 본래의 기능을 유지하기 위한 구조적 건전성이 확보되지 않기 때문이다. 즉, (일부) 건축가들이 만든 음식은 모양만 그럴싸하지 영양가가 없다는 것이다. Chris Wise의 다음 말이 문제의 본질이다.

There is absolutely no way we would look for an architect to front our bid. That would be like Newton asking Shakespeare to front his scientific manuscripts and worse, the public would think that Shakespeare was responsible for the Three Laws of Motion.

이 양반이 아래 인용처럼 자신의 실수를 솔직하게 표명했다고 내가 존경하는 것이 아니고 언제될지 모르겠지만 시간날때 소개할 거시기 때문이다.

‘토목공학을 이해할 때, 세상이 달라 보인다’는 위의 멋진 문구는 영국토목학회(ICE, Institution of Civil Engineers) 홈페이지 학회 소개란 첫 줄에 나와 있는 말이다.

정교일치의 고대 로마에서 종교적으로 최고 위치에 있는 직위는 ‘최고 제사장’으로 칭하는 ‘Pontifex Maximus’인데, 이 이름의 어원을 살펴 보면 재미있는 사실을 알 수 있다.

The term pontifex literally means “bridge-builder” (pons + facere); Maximus literally means ‘the greatest’, i.e. the highest. This was perhaps originally meant in a literal sense: the position of bridge-builder was indeed an important one in Rome, where the major bridges were over the Tiber, the holy river (and a deity, at the same time); only prestigious authorities, with sacral functions, could be allowed to “disturb” it with mechanical additions. However, it was always understood in its symbolic sense as well: the pontifices were the ones who smoothened the bridge between gods and men (Van Haeperen). It has besides been noted that in ancient India similar concepts were in use in similar ages, here too ideally regarding rivers and bridges. [Pontifex Maximus]

달리 해석할 수도 있다지만 어원으로만 따지면 ‘Pontifex Maximus’는 ‘The Greatest Bridge Builder’라는 사실. 교량기술자가 얼마나 위대하고 높은 지위였었는지… 자부심을 갖자.

생각을 다듬지 못하고 주섬주섬 썼다. 써놓고 보니 뭔 얘기인지 모르겠지만 여하튼 이 어딘가에 내 생각은 녹아있다.

세계 최초의 Precast Segmental Box Girder교인 Choisy le Roi Bridge 등을 설계한, PC 교량의 설계 및 시공분야에서 위대한 업적을 남긴 Jean M. Muller의 생애와 그가 남긴 교량들에 관한 글이 PCI저널 2006년 3/4월호에 ‘Jean M. Muller : Bridge Engineer with Flair for the Art Form‘의 제하로 실렸다.

지금은 세계 2위의 사장교로 밀렸지만 사장교 역사의 한페이지를 장식하는 Normandy Bridge와 얼마전 세계인의 주목을 받았던 Millau Viaduct를 설계한 사람.

교량 외관에만 신경을 쓰지 우리나라에 와서 강의까지 했던 Michel Virlogeux라는 사람을 알고 있는 사람은 과연 얼마나 될까?
