Juscelino Kubitscheck Bridge

브리질의 수도인 브라질리아는 주셀리노 쿠비체크 (Juscelino Kubitscheck) 대통령이 1960년 기존의 수도인 리우데자네이루에서 천도를 감행함으로써 새로운 브라질의 수도가 된다.

브라질의 위대한 건축가인 Lúcio Costa와 Oscar Niemeyer의 설계로 만들어진 브라질리아는 공중에서 볼 때, 하늘을 향해 비상하는 비행기 혹은 새 모양을 나타낸다. 비행기의 몸체에 해당하는 곳에는, 정 중앙을 가로지르는 왕복 8차선의 중심도로가 있고, 이 도로를 기준으로 비행기 날개에 해당하는 양쪽에 일반거주지역이 들어서 있으며, 비행기의 머리부분에 해당하는 곳에는 중요한 정부기관 건물들이 들어 서 있다. (구글맵에서 보면 정말 비행기 모양처럼 보인다.)그리고 건조한 지역적인 조건을 고려하여, 안정적인 용수공급을 하고자 거대한 인공호수 Paranoá가 조성되어 있다.

이 호수에 브라질의 새로운 아이콘으로 떠오른 교량이 2002년 완공되었는데 일명 JK Bridge, 즉 브라질리아를 세운 대통령 Juscelino Kubitscheck의 이름을 딴 Juscelino Kubitscheck Bridge이다.

이 교량으로 International Bridge Conference에서 수여하는 Gustav Lindenthal Medal(Awarded for a single, recent outstanding achievement demonstrating harmony with the environment, aesthetic merit and successful community participation)을 받은 건축가 Alexandre Chan은 3개의 아치를 적용한 교량 디자인 컨셉에 대해 다음과 같이 이야기했다.

“to reduce the span, fill some of the emptiness of the crossing and add an intuitive, humorous and interesting aspect : a repeated jump over the rocks of a stream or the move of a thrown flat stone on a quiet surface. Buffalo News : In Brazil, ‘a new sculpture on the lake’ ”
