Zaha Hadid 아줌마가 스페인 Zaragoza Expo 2008에 선보인 교량전시관(Bridge Pavilion)이다. 교량위에 레스토랑이나 전망대 등이 부속물로 설치되어 있는 것들은 보았지만 교량이면서 그 자체가 건축물로서의 또 다른 독립적인 기능을 가진 복합적인 역할을 하는 교량은 처음 본 것 같다. 건축가들의 창의력 하나 만큼은 인정해 주지 않을 수 없다.

Santiago Calatrava가 시편 150:3, “나팔 부는 소리로 여호와를 찬양하라. 하프와 수금으로 여호와를 찬양하라.(Praise Him with a blast of the trumpet; praise Him with the lyre and harp!)”에서 영감을 얻었다는 ‘Bridge of String‘의 완공이 이 달말로 다가 오고 있는데도 아직 논란이 있는 모양이다. 전에 언급했던 내용보단 완공을 앞 둔 교량과 관련된 현실적인 문제점들이 불거져 나오고 있다.

Opponents have objected to an alleged lack of transparency in the planning process and to the higher cost of a suspension bridge, said in 2004 to be nearly 70 percent more than that of a conventional concrete bridge. Others also contend that Jerusalem, sacred to three religions but also the poorest city in Israel, already has enough monuments to attract tourists and does not need to spend money on yet another monument. 뉴질랜드 Te Wero Bridge 공모전에서 150여 출품작 중 1회전를 통과한 4개 작품 중 하나

2회전에는 강력한 우승후보 Wilkinson Eyre와 Denton Corker Marshall 등이 버티고 있지만, 조망자에게 주는 강렬한 임팩트를 고려했을 때 아마도 이 교량이 최종작품으로 결론나지 않을까? 조심스럽게 예상해 본다. 이 교량의 모티브가 새(갈매기)라는 것은 형상만 봐도 알수 있지만, 교량을 보는 순간 ‘갈매기의 꿈‘이 생각나는 것은 비단 나 뿐일까?

수에즈 운하에 정확히 몇 개의 교량이 있는지 알 수 없지만 구글을 통해 본 교량 중에 규모면에서 가장 긴 교량은, 공사비의 60%를 일본의 무상원조를 받아 건설한 Suez Canal Bridge(Mubarak Peace Bridge, Egyptian-Japanese Friendship Bridge) 이고 그 다음이 오늘 소개할려는 세계 최장의 가동교 El Ferdan Bridge이다.

Santiago Calatrava가 디자인한 이태리 Reggio Emilia의 연이은 세 개의 교량을 Structurae[en]에서는 A1 Motorway Bridge라며 그 중 한 개의 교량(Ponte centrale, Central Bridge)만 언급하는데 실은 각각 이태리어로 Ponte nord(North Bridge), Ponte centrale(Central Bridge) 그리고 Ponte sud(South Bridge)이다.
