와델 “A”형 트러스교(Waddell “A” Truss Bridge)의 창안자인 존 알렉산더 로 와델(John Alexander Low Waddell)의 작품.
아래층은 철도, 위층은 차량용으로 만들었으나 철도교가 수면과의 형하공간이 작아 철도교를 들어 올리는 리프팅 시스템을 도입했다. 교량 관리를 담당했던 정육회사와 철도회사의 이름을 따서 ASB교라 명명하였고, 그 후 1985년 Heart of America교가 완공되어 ASB교는 폐쇄됨.

메인주(Maine State) 교량공학자 루엘린 N. 에드워드의 작품으로 화강암을 이용하여 목교나 철교의 부패 및 부식 문제를 해결하였고 파도와 바람에 대한 저항을 줄이기 위해 사진과 같은 독특한 형태를 취한 교량으로 설계를 했다.

신라 景德王代 대형교량 구조의 단서 찾아

춘양교는 월성(月城)의 남동쪽에 인접하여 궁성과 외부를 연결하는 중요한 역할을 하였으며, 지금까지 일정교지(『新增東國輿地勝覽』卷二十一 ; ···日精橋一云春陽橋) 또는 효불효교지(민간전설 ; 孝不孝橋址)로 알려져 왔다.

그러나 발굴조사 결과 월정교와 흡사한 구조의 교량이 드러났고, 이는 『삼국사기』에 기록된 대로 신라 경덕왕(景德王) 19년(서기 760년)에 세워진 춘양교(‘春陽橋’)로 추정할 수 있다.

『三國史記』卷九 ; ‘景德王十九年 … 宮南蚊川之上起月淨春陽二橋’

‘ 경덕왕 19년 ··· 궁의 남쪽 문천상에 月淨·春陽橋 두 다리를 놓았다.’

발굴조사는 서편교대지를 제외한 교량지 전역에 걸쳐 이루어졌는데, 조사결과 춘양교지는 동·서 강안(江岸)에 놓인 교대지(橋臺址)와 그 사이의 교각(橋脚) 3기로 구성되어 있으며, 전체 규모는 길이 55m, 폭 14m 이었음이 밝혀졌다.

세계 최초의 철교 : The Iron Bridge

산업혁명의 요체라 할 수 있는 제철기술과 연료혁명, 증기기관의 발명, 생산 시스템 개편, 대량 수송수단의 개발 등이 두루 일어난 혁명의 진원지는 영국 중서부 세번(Severn) 강변의 ‘콜브룩데일’이었다. 다시 말해 석탄산지였다. 이곳에서 케이커 교도인 아브라함 더비가 숯으로 철을 제련하던 것을 코크스로 바꾸어 제련의 역사에 일대 변혁을 일으켰고, 아들 더비 2세는 물레방아를 돌려 동력을 얻던 방식을 증기기관으로 대체했으며, 더비 3세는 그때까지 이룩한 철의 제련과 주물 기술을 한데 묶어 세번 강 위에 세계 최초로 철교를 놓았다. 그게 바로 ‘아이언브리지’였고, 그리하여 콜브룩데일은 ‘아이언브리지 협곡(Ironbridge Gorge)’이란 이름을 갖게 되었다.
